The Company’s history

The State Geophysical Enterprise “Ukrgeofizika” is the largest organization for carrying out geophysical works on oil, gas and other types of minerals in Ukraine. Having more than 50 years of experience, the enterprise conducts research using a wide range of geophysical methods in the main geological regions of Ukraine as well as abroad.
The larger part of geophysical work falls upon 2D and 3D seismic surveys and well logging.
The high efficiency of the research is ensured by the use of the latest technologies in field work, processing and interpretation of the information received, as well as extensive experience and qualification of geophysicists and geologists working at the enterprise. An important role is played by optimal acquisition of geophysical methods at all stages and phases of work.
Using materials from SGE “Ukrgeofizika”, over 300 deposits of various types of minerals (oil, gas, coal, etc.) have been discovered.

The State Geophysical Enterprise “Ukrgeofizika”

The information about the first geophysical research in Ukraine is derived from a few publications, archival documents and memoirs of labour veterans.
According to this information, the geophysical studies has begun in the 20’s of the last century - magnetic and gravitational surveys.
The first seismic works in Ukraine were carried out in 1931. Since 1935, seismic works began to be planned.
The first industrial and geophysical studies relate to 1932 under an agreement with “Schlumberger”. In 1938, an independent logging party was organized.
In 1930, the USSR Geophysical Service basing mainly in Leningrad was decentralized and separate geophysical teams were created at the territorial geological departments. In 1932, a separate geophysical department was established. In 1940, the Ukrainian Department subordinated to the State Union Geophysical Office was organize and in 1951 reorganized into the trust “Ukrneftegeofizika”.

Brief data on the structure of the enterprise:

The SGE “Ukrgeofizika” consists of 3 geophysical exploration expeditions, 3 expeditions on geophysical research in wells, the Technological Center for processing and interpretation of geophysical materials, one geophysical expedition and the Vocational Training Courses. The enterprise employs 1,200 people.
The company is a member of the Euro-Asian Association of Geophysicists (EAGO), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Association of Scientific, Technical and Business Co-operation in Borehole-Geophysical Investigations and Work (AIS). The enterprise has certificates for the management system in accordance with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, BS OHSAS 18001:2007.

The State Geophysical Enterprise “Ukrgeofizika” belongs to the sphere of management of the State Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine, is a specialized enterprise for carrying out geophysical works on oil, gas and other minerals. Having more than 65 years of experience, the company conducts research using a wide range of geophysical methods in the main geological regions of Ukraine: the Dnipro-Donets depression, the Carpathian oil and gas territory, the Ukrainian crystalline shield, the Black Sea-Crimean oil and gas territory of the Ukrainian sector of the Black and Azov Seas.
Almost all promising oil and gas facilities on the territory of Ukraine have been found and prepared for drilling based on the results of SGE “Ukrgeofizika” geophysical research.

Main types of works and tasks solved by the enterprise:

regional study and geological mapping;
preparation of structures, objects, areas or sites promising for oil, gas and other minerals for exploration drilling;
geophysical surveys in wells to study a geological section and evaluate its productivity;
information processing, complex interpretation and generalization of geological and geophysical materials;
specialized works on ecology; engineering, geological and other types of research.

2D, 3D seismic surveys and geophysical studies in wells occupy the largest part in the volume of geophysical works. High efficiency of research is guaranteed by the use of the latest technologies in the field work, processing and interpretation of the information received, as well as extensive experience and qualification of geophysicists and geologists working in the enterprise. An important role is played by optimal complexation of geophysical methods at all stages and phases of work.
According to the results of SGE “Ukrgeofizika” activity, more than 400 deposits of various minerals (oil, gas, coal, etc.) have been discovered.

The main task of the enterprise

The main task of the enterprise is to execute the state order for the growth of the resource base of hydrocarbons and other minerals. The enterprise carries out works according to the state geological task as well as to the order of other organizations, companies of different forms of ownership.

The specialists have a considerable experience of cooperation with foreign companies in Ukraine as well as experience of performing works abroad.

Seismic exploration works are carried out with the use of 2D and 3D modern technologies under various seismic and geographical conditions. Downhole seismic studies are performed by specialized batches.

Processing and interpretation of seismic information is carried out in the specialized Technological Center as well as in separate divisions of the enterprise

Modern software, workstations and personal computers united into the local networks are used.

The enterprise has created a bank of geological and geophysical data which is constantly replenished and provides reliable storage of information for its multiple use in processing and interpretation.

Geophysical exploration of wells

The second leading activity of the SGE “Ukgeofizika” is the geophysical exploration of wells. They started back in 1932 in the Donetsk coal basin, in agreement with Schlumberger (France).
In the Dnipro-Donets depression these works began in 1936-1937, in the western regions of Ukraine-in 1940 (the city of Boryslav). Apparent resistance of the layers, values of the electric field of natural potentials and temperature were measured in the wells. Interpretation of the received materials was mainly in forecasting of productivity possibilities. Today, the Geophysical Exploration of Wells combines more than 25 methods and modifications of electric, radioactive, acoustic logging.
In 1969, the relevant regulatory documents introduced the mandatory complex of the the Geophysical Exploration of Wells in the key, parametric, search, exploration and exploitation wells being drilled on oil and gas.

Geophysical researches in wells are carried out with the use of computerized measuring complexes and modern lifting equipment, downhole devices and digital information processing.
During the course of work, a complex of geophysical methods is used - seismic exploration, gravure detection, magnetic survey, electric exploration of various modifications, radiometry, geophysical studies of oil-and-gas and coal wells.
The most promising areas of modern geophysics are the technologies that allow creating three-dimensional models of environment, forecasting geological sections with quantitative estimation of environmental parameters (multidimensional, multichannel and wellhead seismic exploration, modern technologies of industrial geophysics in wells and study of borehole environment, advanced technologies for studying potential fields with mathematical support for processing and interpretation.)

The SGE “Ukrgeofizika” actively cooperates with organizations of the National Academy of Sciences - S.I.Subbotin Institute of Geophysics, Institute of Geological Sciences and the branch institutes engaged in discovery and exploration of minerals. For many years, together with the leading scientific organizations of Ukraine and European countries, the SGE “Ukrgeofizika” has been conducting research on the study of the deep structure of the earth crust in order to determine the presence of oil-and-gas content in the subsoil. Such an approach allows making scientifical substantiate of the directions of geological exploration works and effective implementation of modern technologies and technical developments.
During the period of its activity (since 1951), the enterprise has carried out regional studies of the territory of Ukraine determining further directions of exploration works, as well as a significant amount of search and search-and-exploration works making it possible to ensure growth of resources and reserves for the oil-and-gas industry.
Geophysical monitoring of deposits allows solving important issues of efficient exploitation of mineral deposits.
Thanks to an integrated approach to the search for mineral deposits, primarily of oil and gas, the effectiveness of geophysical research is constantly increasing.
Today, the SGE “Ukrgeofiziks” is a powerful organization that conducts geophysical research on the territory of 19 regions of Ukraine, in the waters of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Having modern geophysical equipment, powerful computing centers, advanced technologies for processing and interpretation of geological and geophysical information and highly skilled personnel, the enterprise is one of the leaders of geophysical companies.
The development strategy of the SGE “Ukrgeofizika” is based on the provisions of the National Program for the Development of the Ukrainian Mineral Resources Base for the Period up to 2030”, the Law of Ukraine “On Oil and Gas”, the “Code of the Subsoil”, sectoral and inter-sectoral programs of geological exploration and development of mineral resources base of the state.
